When an approval rule already exists

Saving an approval rule with the same conditions as an active one is refused, naming the one that exists; a rule that overlaps one asks whether to save anyway.

Every approval rule that matches a document applies, so two rules with the same conditions make every document collect both sets of signatures. This is checked on Requisition Approval Rules, PO Approval Rules, Approval Levels, Hiring Approval Rules and Quotation Approval Rules, and ASK and the API get the same answer.

• The same conditions, the same amount and the same order as an active rule: This rule already exists. Choose Edit it instead to open that rule, or Cancel.
• The same conditions at a different amount or in a different order: the two overlap. Choose Edit existing, Save anyway (when both are meant to apply), or Cancel.
• On Approval Levels: the same level number twice on one rule is refused, and so is the same approver twice on one ladder. The same approver at a different amount is a warning you can save anyway.
• A rule saved as inactive is never refused: switching a rule off is how a duplicate is retired.
