Retiring, archiving or deleting a bill of material
A bill of material is Draft, Active, Inactive or Archived. Inactivate and Archive retire one. Delete appears only on a draft that nothing uses.
Each bill on Manufacturing, Engineering, Bills of Material offers the steps its status allows, on its row and on its detail page.
- Activate: a draft or inactive bill becomes one that planning and New production order may choose.
- Inactivate: an active or draft bill is no longer chosen for new orders and plans. Orders already made from it keep it, and you can activate it again.
- Archive: an inactive bill is put away for good. You can still read it for the orders made from it, and it is never chosen again. Neither the bill nor its lines can be edited after that.
- Delete: offered only on a draft bill. It is refused if a production order, plan, configuration, model or item record names the bill, and the message says which one does.
- Renumber lines: numbers the components again, 1, 2, 3 (or 10, 20, 30 where the bill counts in tens), in the order they are shown, with no gaps. Substitutes keep pointing at the line they name. Orders already raised are not changed.
On the Edit form, Status is a list of those four values, so it cannot be typed. A component line can be given its line number. Leave the number empty to add the line at the end.
A bill has no Where used tab and no Linked documents section. To see what was made from a bill, open its 360° view. The multi-level where-used of an item is under Manufacturing, Design & Documents, Structure Explorer. Files attached to a bill are in its Documents panel.
