Send a prescription to a pharmacy electronically
Transmit writes an NCPDP SCRIPT NewRx, signs it, and sends it to the pharmacy you choose from the directory. Pharmacies answer with renewals, change requests and fill notices, which arrive as tasks.
A prescription sent electronically travels as an NCPDP SCRIPT 2017071 NewRx message: the patient, the pharmacy (by its NCPDP id), your credentials (NPI, DEA number, state license) and the drug with its RxNorm code, NDC, quantity unit, days supply, refills, substitution and directions.
- Open EHR > Pharmacy > Prescriptions and choose the prescription.
- Press Transmit, leave Method as erx and choose the pharmacy from the directory.
- For a controlled substance, enter your password and the six-digit code from your authenticator app.
- If decision support stops the prescription (an allergy, a duplicate, a major interaction), read the alert. Send it only with an override reason you would defend.
- Check E-Prescribing Messages: the NewRx and the pharmacy's Status answer appear there.
- Renewal and change requests from pharmacies arrive under Prescriber Tasks. Approving a renewal writes the new prescription and answers the pharmacy.
- Cancel at the pharmacy sends a CancelRx; the prescription is cancelled when the pharmacy confirms.
- A fill notice marks the prescription filled, partly filled or not filled.
Until a Surescripts connection is set up, the sandbox answers in place of the network. Nothing leaves the system, and every sandbox answer says so.
