Run MRP on a sales order

From CRM › Sales Orders, Run MRP works out what one order needs — through every level of its bills of material, netted against free stock and supply on order — suggests what to make, buy or subcontract and by when, and Firm suggestions raises the production orders and the requisition.

A salesperson standing on an order wants to know: what is this order short of, and what has to be made or bought for it, by when? Run MRP answers that without leaving CRM. It uses the same engine as Supply Chain › Supply Planning › Material Requirements Planning (see Material Requirements Planning for a sales order).

Running it

  1. Open CRM › Order to Cash › Selling › Sales Orders. On the order’s row menu choose Run MRP. It is also on the order’s record page and on its next-step bar.
  2. The panel opens on the key figures: Items, Short, To make, To buy, Production orders and Requisitions.
  3. Beneath, one line per component: Item, Level, Required, Available, Short, the Suggestion — Make: planned production order, Buy: purchase requisition, or Subcontract: purchase requisition — Start or order by (the need date less the item’s lead time) and Needed by.
  4. Run again after stock or supply has changed.

Firming

  1. Press Firm suggestions and confirm “Raise the production orders and the requisition, linked to the order”.
  2. A production order is raised for each made item that is short, and one purchase requisition for everything bought or subcontracted that is short. Each names the sales order.
  3. They are listed under Raised for this order. Carry them on as usual: release the production orders, send the requisition for approval and turn it into a purchase order.
  • Pressing Run MRP again never raises anything twice. A suggestion that is still right is kept; one whose quantity or date changed is superseded by a new one; one no longer needed is superseded.
  • What was firmed counts as supply on the next run, so it is not suggested again.
  • A draft order can be run, to see what it would need, but must be confirmed before firming: “The order is still a draft: confirm it first, then firm.”
  • A cancelled, closed, delivered or invoiced order cannot be run: there is nothing left to plan for it.
  • The suggestions are ordinary planned orders: planners see them on Supply Chain › Supply Planning › Planned Orders and under the order on Material Requirements Planning.

Firming raises another module’s documents, so it also needs Add on Manufacturing › Production Orders for made items and Add on Supply Chain › Requisitions for bought ones. Without them Firm suggestions is greyed and says why — for example “Your role may run MRP but not create production orders or requisitions. Ask a planner or buyer to firm these suggestions.” With only one of the two, only that half is raised, and the panel says which.

Shipped defaults: the Administrator may do everything; the Sales & Service and Master Scheduler roles may run it; the Demand Planner may view it. A role somebody has edited is never changed by an update.

Since 18 October each line also has a Fulfilment choice — Make in house, Buy out or Subcontract (components provided) — for whoever holds Change, and Trace & cost follows the order to delivery with its costs and exceptions. See Sales order to MRP, production and subcontracting, end to end.

Since 19 October a configured line is planned from its own configuration at every level, with the routing inherited from the product, and Firm suggestions raises production orders made to that configuration. See Configured products in MRP, the bill of material as a tree, option() and list_price(), and New bill of material.
