An item’s units of measure, lots and serial numbers

Units are chosen from your company’s own list rather than typed, and the lot and serial fields appear only for items that use them.

An item’s units of measure decide how it is counted in stock, sold, bought and labelled. A unit typed by hand — "Nos" on one item, "NOS" on another, "Number" on a third — cannot be converted or compared, so units are now chosen from a list.

Choosing a unit

  • Unit of measure on the item — the unit it is stocked in — offers the active units that may be stocked.
  • Sales unit of measure offers the units that may be sold in, and Purchasing unit of measure the units that may be bought in.
  • A barcode’s Unit of measure offers every active unit, so a carton and a single piece can each have their own barcode.
  • Each choice shows the unit’s code with its name beside it.

The units are your company’s own list, kept under Supply Chain → Units of Measure. A unit missing from the list is added there first; a unit not allowed for stock, sales or purchasing is not offered in that field.

Lot and serial fields

  • Serial prefix and Serial numbering appear only once the item is serialized. An item with no serial numbers has nothing to number.
  • Lot prefix, Lot numbering, Lots may be split and Lots may be merged appear only once the item is under lot control.

Turn serial or lot control on and the fields appear at once, ready to fill in.
