Essays, quizzes and practicals: setting work and handing it in
Setting an essay with a word limit, a marking scheme and an own-work declaration; a student handing it in from My Studies; and who marked it.
Setting work
- In My Teaching, open the section and its Work set tab, and press Set an essay (or Set a quiz, Set a practical, Set a project). Assignments › New works too, for the sections you teach.
- Give the title, due date, points and weight. Type is homework, essay, quiz, practical, project, lab, presentation, participation or reading.
- For an essay, Word limit is the most words expected; up to a tenth over is accepted.
- Marking scheme: one criterion a line (“Anatomical accuracy — 20 marks”). Students see it.
- Handed in as: online text, file or in person. Tick Students declare it is their own work, and change the Declaration if you want other words (blank: “I declare that this is my own work.”).
- Publish it to the class. Work that is not published cannot be handed in.
Handing in: My Studies
- Student Lifecycle › Students › My Studies shows the student’s courses, attendance in each, and My work (to hand in, overdue, marked).
- Press a piece of work: the description, due date, word limit and How it is marked are shown. Write or paste the work; the counter shows words against the limit.
- Hand in stays greyed until there is text and the declaration is ticked.
- More than a tenth over the word limit is refused, saying the count. After the due date the work is saved as late if the assignment accepts late work, and refused if not.
- Work already graded is handed in again only if the teacher asks for a resubmission.
Marking
Open the assignment for its Submissions (Words, Declared own work, Status, Score) or an assessment for its Results (Fill from section lists the class). Marked by is filled with whoever gives or changes the score.
A student whose sign-in is not linked to a student record sees no studies: the registrar links it on the student record.
