Material Requirements Planning for a sales order

Supply Chain › Supply Planning › Material Requirements Planning shows what one sales order (or every open one) needs, level by level, netted against stock and open supply, and raises the requisition and the production for what is short.

The planning run plans a whole warehouse over a horizon. Material Requirements Planning answers a narrower question that comes up every day: what does this customer’s order need, what is already here or on its way, and what still has to be bought or made for it. The order is exploded through its bills of material level by level and netted against free stock and open supply; what is short is bought on a requisition that names the order, or made on a planned order that becomes its production order.

  1. Open Supply Chain › Supply Planning › Material Requirements Planning (ASK and Ctrl K also find it as MRP).
  2. Pick a sales order at the top right, or leave Every open sales order to see the requirements of all of them.
  3. Read the figures: Requirements, Short, To buy and To make. Each row gives the Sales order, Item, Description, Make or buy, Level, Required, On hand, On order, From stock, From supply, Short, Need by and Covered by. A short row is marked; a part is shown with the item it is for.
  4. With one sales order picked, press Raise requisition: one purchase requisition is raised for everything bought that is short, one line per item, carrying the sales order.
  5. Press Plan production: a firmed planned order is made for each made item that is short, linked to the sales order.
  6. Under Raised for <sales order>, each requisition shows its status, approval, lines and purchase order. Choose a supplier (or keep Suggested supplier), press Send for approval where it has not been sent, and Approve → PO to turn it into a purchase order.
  7. Each planned order has Convert to production order. The production orders made for the order are listed with their quantity, completed quantity, due date and status.
  8. Recalculate reads stock and supply again.
  • Supply counts free stock, open purchase order and requisition lines, open production orders and firmed planned orders, so what was raised once is not raised again.
  • Raise requisition and Plan production are greyed when nothing is short to buy or to make. With Every open sales order picked, choose one order to raise anything.
  • Releasing a production order raises the requisition for any operation done by a subcontractor; the material sent out is issued and received under Material at Subcontractors. See Operations done by a subcontractor.
  • The planner, supply planner and production planner roles may raise from the screen; the master scheduler, plant manager, logistics director, sourcing and demand planner roles may read it. A buyer turns the requisition into a purchase order on Requisitions as before. The planner and supply planner roles also have the Planning Workbench (Manufacturing › Material Planning).
