Configure a product built from configurable sub-assemblies (TG310 = TG100 + TW310)

Answer the product's questions once; the answers flow down into its sub-assemblies, the rules decide components, quantities, bill and routing at every level, and resolving makes an item, a bill and a routing for each level.

Some products are built from parts that are configurable products themselves. TG310 is a temperature gauge with a thermowell: it contains a TG100 gauge and a TW310 thermowell, and both ask questions the TG310 has already answered (stem type, case material, stem diameter; the thermowell's rod diameter, well insertion and well extension). The configurator now creates the TG100 and TW310 configurations as soon as you start TG310, and writes your answers into them while you are answering, so nothing is typed twice.

  1. Open Supply Chain > Product Configurator > Configure a Product, choose TG310 and press Start configuring.
  2. Answer the questions. After every answer the rules run: defaults fill in (GAUGE_TYPE = B fills STEM_TYPE = R), validations warn or block (Bimetal with a capillary stem is refused), and the answers flow down to TG100 and TW310.
  3. A question marked locked was answered by a rule that does not let it change (STEM_LOCATION = E locks STEM_TYPE to R). Its reason is shown beside it.
  4. Read Characteristics across the product: one row per characteristic, one column per model, a dash where a model does not ask it, and 'from the parent' where an answer came down.
  5. Answer the sub-assembly questions shown under the product's own: these are the only ones nothing filled in. TG100's stem length is not asked at all: rule TG310-P03 works it out as well insertion + well extension + 50 mm (225 + 50 + 50 = 325) and locks it, and TG100's stem pipe follows it.
  6. Watch Bill of material, routing and cost and Structure by level update: every level's components and operations, with the reason each is there.
  7. When everything is complete press Resolve. TG310, TG100 and TW310 each become a configured item with its own bill of material and routing, and TG310's bill names the TG100 and TW310 items.
  8. Press Make a production order. TG310's order is raised together with an order for TG100 and one for TW310, linked to it.
  • An answer with a number of its own (Other: 8.25 mm) is typed in the box under the answer; the model says how many decimal places it takes, so 8.255 is refused when it takes two.
  • A default you may change is shown as chosen by a rule; choose another answer and it is yours.
  • A sub-assembly error (an unanswered TG100 question) appears on TG310 too, because TG310 cannot be made without it.
  • Which answers flow down, and whether the sub-assembly may change them, is the model's Structure (inheritance) map, plus propagation rules such as IF TG310.DIAL_SIZE = 6" THEN TG100.DIAL_SIZE = 6" or TG100.STEM_LENGTH = WELL_INSERTION + WELL_EXTENSION + 50: change them under Configurator · Workbook or the model's rules, never in code.
  • A warning does not stop the configuration being completed; an error does.

The same panels appear when you configure the product from a quotation line (Configure on the line).
